PhD dissertation proposal: is it hard to write one?

During the time you are trying to get your doctoral degree, you will be asked to write many dissertations that will probably never get published. Before you are able to submit your dissertation, you will have to write a dissertation proposal and have it approved. Many students struggle with the fact that their proposal will probably be bounced back and forth several times. This is a normal procedure so if it gets sent back the first time for revisions, don’t give up.

This task is a hard one to write but with a few easy steps, you can limit the amount of times it gets returned to you.

Step One: Narrow your topic

This is an important part of the dissertation proposal process. Make sure that you haven’t chosen too broad of a topic. Instead of writing a dissertation about the field as a whole, try to break it down to a subcategory. This will help you narrow the topic enough to get valid research done about it. Make sure that you choose a subcategory that is well known and relevant to the field of study.

Step Two: Check out the guidelines

This is a step a lot of students leave out until they have had their proposal returned the first time for not following the specific guidelines. Make sure you study the guidelines so that your total concentration is on a proposal that can be accepted. Not only that but some of the guidelines will give you a specific structure to follow. This structure can be used to set your proposal up so that you don’t have to stare at a blank piece of paper in the beginning of the process.

Step Three: Come up with a clear thesis

This is probably the hardest part of the process. It is essential to make sure that individuals in other industries can understand the point that you are trying to make. Write your thesis sentence over and over again. This is the center of the whole paper. Without this in line, you will never get your paper together.

Don’t let your PhD dissertation proposal get the best out of you. Concentrate on these three steps and you will be on the right track. If you have to repeat the process more than once, just know that this is very common and to keep pushing towards your goals.
